General UV Lamp Information
There are several different kinds of UV lamps in use in modern UV disinfection units. These are the 'older style' low output type, a 'high output' version of these lamps, an even higher output version (called 'amalgam' lamps) and a slightly different technology called 'medium pressure' UV lamps. All of the lamp types (with the exception of the medium pressure type) have an operating efficiency of about 30 - 35% i.e. they generate 30 - 35% of the input power as useful UV-C. They also have a lifetime of between 8000 -16000 hours. Medium pressure lamps only generate about 8 - 10% useful UV-C and typically have a life-time of about 4000 hours, making them expensive to run and maintain.
