How are UV Lamps used in Aseptic Food Packaging

How are UV Lamps used in aseptic food packaging?

UVO3 explores how UV disinfection methods, which are already utilized for water and HVAC disinfection, can also provide a cost-effective and efficient solution for disinfecting food packaging.

Why and how are UV lamps used in aseptic food packaging?

First of all, to understand how UV lamps are used in aseptic food packaging we need to know more about the process of aseptic.

What is Aseptic Processing?

Aseptic processing is the process where commercially thermally sterilised liquid products are packaged into previously sterilised containers, under sterile conditions to produce long life products that do not require refrigeration or reheating for sterilisation. This process is an alternative to conventional canning of shelf-stable packaged food products.

The Process

In order to achieve aseptic food processing, it is necessary to sterilize not only the products before filling, but also the packaging materials and the insulation before operations. Furthermore, it is crucial to maintain sterility throughout the entire operation, including the production of hermetically sealed packages that are air tight.

Firstly, the food products are heated to the desired ‘ultra-high’ temperature – maintaining this temperature for a period of time until complete sterility is achieved. After, the food is cooled to an ‘ambient’ temperature.

Various methods for sterilisation of the packaging can be used either – irradiation; heat and chemical treatments, including, dry heat; saturated steam; and UV light.

UV Disinfection

UV-C radiation is the most efficient for microbial eradication, particularly in commercial settings. Hygienic packaging is essential for maintaining the quality of microbiologically sensitive packaged goods. UV disinfection is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach to sterilizing packaging materials.

The reason the correct disinfection method is vital is that there are high risks of bacteria like salmonella and coli bacteria being contracted. However, luckily these are easily destroyed by UV disinfection methods.

For a simple, fast and reliable process, choose UV disinfection when disinfecting the packaging. Their short waves of UV light destroys DNA of all micro-organisms without the addition of any chemicals.

UV disinfection units from UVO3 have been specially developed for a variety of disinfection uses, including that of packaging and surfaces.
