Ok, you want to know how to reset a Sterilight UV ballast. Good news, it’s easy. If you’re wondering why you haven’t figured it out on your own yet, this is because Sterilight UV made it near impossible to do by accident.
So, by following these few simple instructions, the ballast will not only stop beeping at you but also give a 365 countdown for your new lamp. Although I’m talking about a BA-ICE-S ballast, the instructions are the same for the SP Platinum series as well, your reset button is the little display window on top.
Method:
Firstly, turn off your UV ballast from the power.
Now hold down the reset button on the side, keep it held down.
Now turn the main power back on. Yes, you still have the reset button held.
Wait for the RSET display and the single beep after about a second
Release the reset button
There, that’s it. You’re done. Feel free to leave words of thankful gratitude below.

Hi, my unit shows nothing on thr display and still 1 second beeps. I have replaced the bulb (twice) and the sleeve and still the same. have cleaned the nodes and still the same. Any ideas or back to manufacturer?
This sounds very much like a ballast fault. If you get the serial number from your unit and call your original supplier, if your unit or ballast is newer than 5 years old then you will be covered by Sterilight’s Pro-rated warranty. If your unit is older than 5 years then I’m afraid this will be up to you to cover.
A blank screen is the default sign for a lamp failure, your ballast will not be beeping at you while this is occurring though. Any other errors will be shown on you display as an A, then a number. Since your ballast has not shown a valid fault display, it will need replacing 99% of the time. Sometimes on the off chance, a simple ballast reset will miraculously resolve the problem. I hope this helps.
Please note that this “pro rated” warranty has now been changed to a flat 2 year warranty.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your simple and helpful advice. Our ballast has been beeping a long time, and we didn’t know how to reset it. Thanks to your instructions, we are now living beep-free.
I owe you a drink!
That was way too easy.
Thank you.
why display still shown ‘000’ after i replace uv lamp
thank you
You need to reset the ballast after the lamp has been changed. Once the ballast has been reset it will show ‘365’ again.
What does in mean when the display shows 8888 and there is a continuous beep?
It means your controller is faulty, this error code is not an official one. If you have reset the ballast and it is still showing the same thing then speak to the people who sold you or installed the system and they should be able to help you with replacement under warranty. If it’s not under warranty any more, get your 3 quotes.
Reset worked. Thank you.
thank you so much! it worked.
I have model S12QA Sterilight system that is not working properly. When it beeps, I unplug it for a while and restart it. The ballast is enclosed in the base of the unit, so if there’s a reset button, I can’t easily see it. I unscrewed the top plate and looked down but could only see about 3/4’s of the ballast, no red button. Do I need to replace the ballast? I bought a used unit and the tag shows that the bulb was changed in 1998. I believe that the ballast is older than that. Where can I get a ballast for the unit?
Well you’re more than welcome to get a ballast from ourselves if you need one. I would try find your reset button first though. It isn’t a red button but a little black one, usually on the end of the ballast. I would try completely remove it from the enclosure to get a good 360 look at it. If there are no obvious ways to get it out, take a few pictures and send them to me. I may have come across a similar unit in the past. Obviously the bulb having been replaced in 1998 will be completely useless now, they only last a year in total. Replacing the ballast would be our last option, they’re the most expensive individual components on the unit so we only do it when the old one is completely dead.
Thanks you. My reference of 1998 bulb change was for approximate age of the system. I change the bulb this year. Does the bulb totally not work after 365 days?
I will if necessary take the unit apart to see if I can locate a reset button. I hope that the designer of this system had foresight that the reset button would be on the top as the ballast is mounted.
Thank you, again.
That’s most ok. Unfortunately the bulb will appear to be fine after a year, even 5 years. However, the UV output part (the useful bit that we can’t see) drops off considerably after the year mark.
You give a lot of credit to the system designer there. In our time we have been blessed to see a plethora of innovative storage solutions that often render our equipment completely inaccessible. Like I say though, you should be looking for a little black nub on the end of the controller, above the power in cable currently. Good Luck!
Thank you!
You are a genius! That beeping has been annoying me for the last 6 months. Thanks again.
Troubleshoot
Have reset 365 day timer according to proper guide lines but have not been able to stop the beeping. Do I have a defective bulb?
Hi Loris,
I would need to ask if the controller is showing anything on the display? If it is blank and bleeping then it’s your bulb, it’s blown up. If it’s showing a fault code then it will be something that your manual will relate to. I can send you a new manual or tell you what the fault code means if you don’t have your original one.
Fixed in under 10 seconds.
Thank you very, very much!
Thank you very much nice to be able to reset this thing seeing as the installer did’nt see fit to leave any instructions or manuals
thanks….
You made… the … beeping… stop. I cannot thank you enough. It was driving me nuts!
Thanks a lot it was so simple that i could read it easily with no trouble!!!
Thanks, it works OK.
Hi. I have a similar system. Swapped to a new bulb as I always do. Turned off pwr. Held button during start up. I can hear the ballast try to light the light 3 times. But continues to beep now… faulty light or bad ballast?
thanks, aaron
Hi there,
It could be either to be honest. I would contact whoever supplied the lamp in the first place (I’ve checked and I don’t think it was us, so make sure it’s not a Chinese manufactured lamp while you’re there) and they should send you another lamp out just to test it. If after that you don’t have any joy then you would be looking at the controller. Depending on how old the unit is you might be able to offset some of the cost with warranty. They now come will 2 years full cover or a slightly different type if they’re older than that but still less than 5 years old.
I have the older F series version that does not contain a reset button. I’ve tried unplugging it several times, but still continues to beep when plugged back in. Any ideas on how to reset this version?
Hello Thomas,
On the older F systems your reset button is the SWITCH/LED (so the manual says) You use that the same way as the method in the article. If you would like an electronic copy of your manual then just contact us and I’ll email you one through.
My Reset worked. Thank you!!!
Thank you!
I had “A3” show up when I replaced the bulk a couple weeks ago and I could not reset it back to 365 days according to the simple instructions on the ballast unit itself. So I had to reset once a week to stop the “A3” beeping. You apparently have only four times for that. So was not looking forward to have to have the ballast looked at…
Your instructions worked great. I was able to start the counter back to 365 days.
Big thanks!
We have a BA-ICE-IF ballast, no reset button that we can find. All we have is a tiny green LED light but does not push. How do we reset to stop the infernal beeping? Thanks
Hello,
The BA-ICE-1F was discontinued in 2009 and replaced with the BA-ICE-S, so the information I’m referring to is a little old. As per the manual, you need to apply power to the unit “while holding the reset SWITCH/LED” After a 3 second beep your timer has reset. Being so old I would first make sure that your switch isn’t just very stiff, I am certainly not aware of a range of these ballasts where there was a different style used. That being said, I’m often mistaken 🙂 If this is not the case then you can call us to talk through a suitable solution.
Seriously?!?! Thank you!!!
hello
I did the process, the beeping already stopped, now shows 365..what does that mean? 365 days..i have 1 years with mine do you think i need to replace it..do you think the warranty still work?
thanks for your help
This alarm will go off yearly. As long as you have replaced the old lamp before resetting the controller, it means that your new lamp will work for 365 days.
Beware, even though your old lamp may still be emitting a blue light, the UV part of the bulb will fall off after a year.
I recently replaced my UV bulb and performed the reset. I see rset on the screen with it beeping, but afterwards instead of displaying how many days left its showing “00t”? I left it for two weeks and this morning noticed it beeping showing A3. I checked all the connections and tried a reset again. It says rset, but just comes back with this 00t. Could the bulb be bad? Ballast faulty?
I would guess that your last LED digit may be faulty and it’s trying to say 000. A3 means that your bulb needs replacing. If you can safely see if your bulb is on and working then it will be a matter of going through the reset process again, the system will be perfectly functional. If your bulb is not working then the fault code is correct and you have a broken lamp. It will then being a case of going back to who supplied the lamp and seeing if they will help.
Ordered a new bulb installed it, reset, same thing.
Figuring the ballast must be shot 🙁
It could be your ballast but it depends on what it’s showing. If you have a fault code then refer to your manual, it may not be your bulb. If your screen is blank and beeping is constant then I would get into contact with your original supplier (with your serial number handy) and see what kind of help / warranty they can offer.
Just an update it was the ballast, replaced with a new one and all is fine. Will see if I can get a replacement for the faulty one under warranty as it only lasted year.
My BA ICE S continues to beep, so I reset as per instructions and it showed 365, then 0587, then continued to beep and go blank.
0587 is not a valid fault code. You will need to contact the supplier of the unit and check the warranty status. If you are within your warranty period you will receive a replacement free of charge.
thank u so much I hav been reset that dam a3 flash and beep ever wk such an easy fix thanks again lui
after i reset my ba-ice-s the days reset to 377 why is that after a few minutes beep returns just replaced bulb
Hello,
If your controller is going right back to fault after resetting the lamp then it is likely to be an electrical fault within the controller. If your controller is in warranty then I would recommend contact whoever you ordered the unit from directly and seeing where you stand. I’m almost certain it will need replacing though.
I know this may be a dumb question, but my BA-ICE-S is plugged into a powered outlet but it does not beep or show anything on the display. Replace? Or is there a magical fix?
Hello Brian,
There is no magical fix unfortunately. If your controller is not responding then I would contact the supplier if it is less than 2 years old and enquire about a warranty replacement. They may require the old unit back for testing. If it is greater than 2 years old then I would recommend you start shopping around for a replacement.
If a controller stops working like this then it would be worth installing some surge / spike protection ahead of your new controller. It sounds like some of your internal components may have blown up.
Thanks Ryan! Its definitely more than 2 years old so I’ll shop around. Thanks again!
Thank you thank you
I have a Viqua UV Filter model S8Q-PA with a Sterilight BA-ICE.S. It is 5 years old. Last week I had the bulb changed, but the service guy could not reset the display on the ballast. it was still showing 007. Having referred to the manual, I have tried to re-set it by unplugging the power source, holding in the re-set button and plugging the power source back in whilst still holding the re-set button in. I get a brief 8888 on the display and then the number of days left from the old lamp, i.e. 003 as of today. I do not get any beeping and the lamp is still working. My service guy and Viqua are suggesting I need a new ballast. Do you agree, or is there suggestion of how I can fix it?
Thank You
Tony
Hi Tony,
If your lamp is still working then you can be a lot more relaxed about the whole thing. You have a couple of options in my mind. You can buy a new controller and have the fully functional countdown timer and fault display. This would be the official line that anyone working directly with Viqua, including ourselves, would take. Your unit is not being operated in the way it has been designed to.
Alternatively you can keep your current controller and make a note on your calender for 1 years time when your lamp is going to run out and need changing. Keep a close eye on the system especially as it goes past that 001 day countdown to make sure nothing goes horribly wrong. But I would say if you poke your head in regularly and make sure then lamp is still on then you would be fine foregoing the cost of the new controller.
The controller is there primarily to turn that lamp on. Everything else is a feature of the system. Useful and help? Yes. Essential? Now that’s up to you. I hope that gives you a bit of insight and allows you to make the right decision for you.
Thank you Ryan,
The lamp is still working. We leave off running any water during the night, and then check if the filter outside casing feels warm in the morning.
Like you say I will monitor the situation after day 001 and then come to a decision.
Your opening statement did make me more comfortable about the situation.
Thank you once again, or as we say in this neck of the wood:
Cheers Mate
Tony V.
I have a ba-ice-3f with an RCON controller with a green light and alarm. I replaced the bulb and the ballast and now the rcon won’t stop beeping but the uv light is on? How can I stop the alarm on the rcon and/or what is causing this.
Thank you,
Brian
Hi there Brian,
The controller that replaced the R-Can controller has recently been superseded itself. So your little ballast has had a fairly decent innings. If you’ve just got the alarm constantly sounding at you then it sounds pretty faulty as you can’t reset these ballasts. If you turn it off and back on again and the same thing is happening then it time to either get some ear plugs or replace it. You’ll have to be quick though as they have just been made a discontinued product by the manufacturer about 2 weeks ago. I hope that helps.
Ryan
I reset it and 365 lights up for a half second then back to a blank screen and beeping
Hello Joel,
Your controller is in ‘Lamp failure mode’ I would try an old lamp in the unit if you have one to hand just to confirm this. If you’ve just ordered a new lamp then I would ask for a replacement from the vendor. If it’s an old lamp then it’s time to buy a new one. Bear in mind that the UV output from these lamps start dropping off significantly after 1 year. The blue safety light may still be working but your lamp will be next to useless.
Thanks so much unfortunately I ordered a new controller, but, since this one is 6 years old I will keep the order I just ordered uv lamp. Last time and first time I ordered the cheap lamp that now lasted 45 days
Have a ba-ice-1f unit in rented home. Replaced lamp since I was told no one had done so in a few years. Now what? Lamp doesn’t light and I can find no reset button or display. What gives?
Hello,
The BA-ICE-1F doesn’t have a reset button, just the little LED on the cap to let you know it’s turned on. If that LED isn’t on and you’re 100% that there’s power going to the unit then your ballast has blown. If the light is on then you have a faulty lamp. I would imagine it would be fairly easy to get a new one sent out from a reputable company.
I have an older model SPV-15. Changed lamp and reset, everything good for a few minutes, then get error message “interlock open”. What does this mean? Sometimes it will go off and lamp starts, like a loose connection, or something.
Hi there,
On these units, when you look into the black end cap that you plug your lamp into you will see a small button. This will be pressed down when push the black cap onto the unit and be held in place when your holding pin is engaged. The fault ‘Interlock open’ is when this little button isn’t pressed in properly. You will first need to absolutely make sire that your black end cap is all the way. You will get your exact problem if it’s not seated correctly. It will touch the chamber if it’s on right. As doing this, if you still have a fault then it could be a faulty connection though I’ve never known that to been a problem before. Hope that helps.
THanks so much, it worked perfectly. Wife heard beeping and we found the A3 code. Had to get the manual trying to ind out where I buy new light …. Resetting was much easier.
Hi,
I cannot reset the beeping noise. I have an old Sterilight S-12Q with no reset button nor any digital display. It has a small LED light that remains green when the bulb is operating correct. From doing some research, it seems I may have a discontinued ballast BA-120 but not sure. I replaced the bulbs and had a local professional come and also take a look, but couldn’t keep the UV bulb on. It tried to stay on 2 times and then off with continuous beeping. Do you think my ballast is shot? Can I get a replacement or have to replace the whole unit? Thanks for your help.
Hi there,
Can I get you to think outside the box for a moment? Imagine that UV bulbs get slightly more efficient every year and that older ballasts will be fine running them, but only up to a certain point (perhaps for 10 – 15 years). This is the situation you find yourself in. Now you would be fine to just upgrade your controller to a BA-ICE-S as these will run the lamp, except that I believe that your unit may be too old to accept the new style BA-ICE-S controller. The unit you have has been superseded twice so I’m unsure if it will fit on. If you want to get access to the unit and give me a call I would be able to talk you through a solution.
Regards,
Ryan
Does any know what a A1 error msg means. My system beeps and then the screen goes blank. It briefly displays a A1. My system is about 11 years old. I just replaced the light bulb and the quartz sleeve. Is it time for a new system?
Hello,
I know what A1 means yes. Because the system is old it is the original ‘lamp fault’ error code. I would first advise that you put a new or known working lamp in the unit. That should fix the problem. If it doesn’t then it is your controller that’s at fault and for the price of a new controller, I would recommend updating your system to a newer model. That’s if you look at it from a cost perspective, the difference is negligible. If you don’t want to touch your plumbing then a new controller should work fine.
I want to ask .BA.ICE.S in our company if in the given power direct alarm sounds and the screen is not lit .. what causes it? Thank you very much
Hello,
If the alarm is sounding and the screen is blank then the controller is in ‘Lamp failure mode’. Reset the controller to make sure it is still the case after and if it is then you will require a new lamp. This is not covered under warranty though if it happened here with us and the lamp was less than 1 month old then we would replace it out of courtesy. I hope that helps.
Thank you so much!!! Now it works without any beeping!
I had a Sterilight Platinum / VIQUA Electronic ICE Contoller installed in my house about 7 months ago. I am on ground water (well)and have a small filter the water runs through before entering the Sterilight canister. The plumber who installed it said to keep an eye on the filter and change it regularly. After about 5 months the UV Level percentage (seen on the controller display) dropped down below 50% and an alarm started (2 beeps, one second pause followed by 2 more beeps… repeat). I changed the filter and the UV% level moved back up into the 80% range. After a few days it dropped back down below 50% and the alarm started. again. Have changed the filter multiple times since and it seems to work for a few days then UV level drops below 50% and the alarm starts up. It seems to hang around the 45% range. Not sure if it matters or not but the type of filter I am using is a CF1-9 Fine Pore 5 Micron. Do I need to replace the Lamp (even though it has only been used for just over a year)? Any help is appreciated on how to get rid of this alarm.
Hi Mike,
If you have a UV sensor then the number one problem with low UV levels is hardness building up on either the quartz sleeve, the sensor window or both. We advise that you de-pressurise the unit and take the quartz sleeve out for a visual check. If there is a build up then we recommend that you use a slightly abrasive pad (one of the green kitchen ones is fine) with an acid based cleaner to remove it.
If this doesn’t fix your problem then the next thing to do is actually check to see if the quality of the water supply has degraded at all. The equipment being absolutely correct and indicating a real problem is often overlooked. One thing is for certain though. Some on your system is not quite right.
Let me know how you get on.
Spot on with this write-up, I absolutely feel this site needs far more attention. I’ll probably be back again to see more, thanks for the information!|
thank you it was really simple even for someone like me. you were a god send.
Thank you so very much fr this information
THANK YOU! Worked the first time. Maybe this headache will go away now.
Thank you very much, the beep was driving us crazy – expecially after the 4 week reset limit !
Changed the bulb and sleeve, reset, and 365 showed JB the display screen for about 5 second twitched then dimmed out completely. No it is beeping and there is nothing on the display screen. Any ideas?
Hi there,
I would carefully check to see if your UV lamp is still working regardless of what the controller is saying. If it is working then you can choose to either replace it, get it replaced if it’s under warranty (contact the people who supplied it for this) or manually remind yourself on a year to year basis (we don’t recommend the last one).
If the lamp isn’t lit and the unit is under 2 years old then you can get a replacement one under warranty (contact your supplier again). If it’s over two years old then I would recommend shopping around to get a new (genuine) one from as reputable a supplier as possible. Be prepared though, these are the main piece of equipment in a uv unit, like the engine in a car, and they will be moderately expensive.
Hi.. thanks for information
God bless you
